  1. Eric M. Van says:

Early props to Gregory Ellwood, the only person who gets that Parasite is actually the Best Picture favorite if you look at all the relevant data and history.

  2. Bradley Laing says:

A korean film just won the Oscar!

  3. Bradley Laing says:

—Note: i am on Eastern time, where is it 11:31 pm.

  4. Eric M. Van says:

Elsewhere online, I labelled Parasite the favorite even before it won the SAG. After it won, I upped its odds to 2-3. And I had 1917 at 9-1 the whole time; I would have had Parasite at 1-9 if it weren’t for Once Upon a Time as a potential contender, and Birdman beating Boyhood, i.e., Oscar’s notorious love for movies about actors.

Trivia question: what’s the only known film that was named the best film of the year by a higher percentage of critics, and also has a higher user rating at IMDB? Easier trivia question with the same answer: what was the first fantasy or science fiction film to win the Oscar for Best Picture?

Trivia question I expect never to know the answer to: how many movies have increased either their domestic box office rank or gross for nine consecutive weeks, beginning in their 8th week of release (or later)? Parasite did that, and in that time period its rank in the IMDB top 250 actually went up from 27 to 26.

Financial Times

"While most news media groups have been battered, a handful of premium publishers are holding their ground through the tempest. Backed by a subscription model built over the past decade, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have so far decided against the mass lay-offs and pay cuts that have wracked the majority of their peers, and are even still looking to hire. “Bluntly: I was optimistic when we had half a million subscriptions. We now have 10 times that and I’m still optimistic,” Mark Thompson, chief executive of the New York Times Company, told the Financial Times."

Richard Brody: "A curse of modern movies: people don't walk in and out of rooms, open and close doors, get in and out of cars, get and pay a check; it's Godard's fault because everyone copies him but lacks his powers of abstraction and artifice; they always want to be real so it comes off fake. Not literally everyone; and by now, it has become a convention and few, if any, even know where it comes from, who they're copying, let alone why."

Bilge Ebiri: "In the wake, are movie theaters, having long since lost their essential place in our culture, going to become relics of the past? Probably not. People are desperate to get out of the house, get their kids out of the house and get back to normal. “When this lifts, none of us are ever going to want to be anywhere close to our couch or our TV ever again,” predicts Richard Rushfield, who runs the popular film-industry newsletter The Ankler. “Our couch is going to have associations for us of this awful time.” One recent survey found that almost three out of four Americans said they missed going to movie theaters — which is significantly higher than the percentage of Americans who regularly went in the before times. New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis spoke for many of us when she wrote, “When at last we can go out again and be with one another, I hope that we flood cinemas, watching every single movie, from the most rarefied art film to the silliest Hollywood offering.”
