TheWrap

“TheWrap published a guest blog by Ross Johnson, “Why Darnella Frazier Is the Most Influential Filmmaker of the Century,” that fell short of our editorial standards… Going forward, TheWrap is going to review the way we commission, edit and publish our Hollyblog guest blogs. This is a difficult time in the history of the United States, when we are called to listen as well as to speak out.”
“Using her iPhone with a 2x optical zoom, Frazier subtly moved within a chaotic tableau to capture the last gasps of Floyd, and, only when called for, panned her camera away from Floyd to capture the dismay of onlookers. She caught the utter mystery of the stoic Chauvin, and the minute adjustments of his knee-to-neck chokehold on Floyd.”

AMC

“California officials asked theater owners to consider using disposable seat covers. Theater employees will be required to wear masks. Moviegoers may only be encouraged to wear them. AMC said it was looking into high-tech vacuums, “electrostatic sprayers” and upgraded ventilation systems. Clorox may serve as a cleanliness adviser.”

MRC

“Satchu and Wiczyk are relative newcomers to journalism. They were handed control of THR and Billboard in 2018 when billionaire Todd Boehly, a minority owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and film distributor A24, reorganized hish oldings into Valence Media, in which Satchu and Wiczyk have ownerships takes. The media-shy pair’s background is in finance—both attended Harvard Business School, and together they founded MRC in 2006.

“I’m just in disbelief that he would be so bold.”
“It really breaks my heart that he was able to do this under the radar.”

David Wilson

David Wilson: “I’m rejoining True/False to serve as Interim Artistic Director. I can’t imagine a more exciting (i.e. scary) time to try and help reimagine what a film fest can be and how it can serve the community. Lucky to be doing the work alongside Amir George and Jeanelle Augustin. Today True/False announced the departure of Director of Programming Chris Boeckmann. I want to express how critical Chris has been to the evolution of the fest, and, honestly, to the modern nonfiction cinema landscape. I remember realizing one day on my way to the office that very few people get to spend their days arguing the nuances of documentary form with people as smart and committed as the T/F programming team.”

Ianucci

Armando Iannucci: “We’ve got to have something to come back to and if there is nothing there, if three quarters of our theatres are shut, if there is nowhere for music to be played, bands have packed it in because all their money comes from touring – then what will there be left? It’s important that we think about what’s ahead, to what the cultural life of the country will be like.”

David Tennant

David Tennant: “You’re asking people to pay a lot of money to potentially have someone coughing into their packet of boiled sweets and infecting them. I don’t know what the answer is yet. It’s urgent, because the performing arts in this country don’t exist with huge profit margins. We’ll need government intervention until theatres can safely reopen, and audiences are happy to go back.”

B Bob

Paul Duane: “It is very sad that Joe Bob Briggs has jumped ship from Fangoria because of their support for #BLM & it [is] in no way has anything to do with his longterm association with Taki’s Magazine, home of rich white supremacy.

Branagh

Kenneth Branagh in Total Film: “I kid you not, I read this screenplay more times than I have ever read any other thing I have ever worked on,” Branagh said of his role in Tenet. “It was like doing the Times crossword puzzle every day, I would imagine. Except the film and the screenplay didn’t expect you, or need you, to be an expert.”

Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe: “Certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment…”

Mark Gill Startup

“Solstice conducted a survey of 1,000 moviegoers, asking them if they would be willing to go see a movie in a theater in early July. Gill expected about 40% to 50% of people to say they were game. 80% said yes. ‘It was interesting… We decided to go ahead and be the canary in the coal mine.'”

Showrunners and Police Brutality

“When I hear Hollywood colleagues playfully pondering whether or not we’re doing enough to address the image of the hero cop that has been entrenched as a procedural staple, the answer is clear: hell fucking no. There’s a ton of work we still have to do. Individuals and corporations are offering lip service to preserve business, using statements to indicate support for black people. The real test, as always, is: what actions will we see? For many writers, the idea of police brutality remains a fad. For a black writer, this probability can be infuriating. A few months ago, I wrote a scene between LAPD officers, observing how there were 27 years between the Watts and the Rodney King Riots and how 2020 marked 28 years since the King riots. Were we a year overdue for another uprising? When I wrote that scene, I got a sense from white colleagues that it was the equivalent of science fiction, that surely this couldn’t happen again. Turns out, we were only a few weeks away from our latest unrest over George Floyd’s death. To a black writer, this shit isn’t a fad that can and will be conveniently forgotten in a few weeks. The pain is always there.”

Second City

“As Black alumni and current employees, we feel it is our responsibility to try to keep our brothers and sisters safe. You use our names to market your business, however we in good conscience cannot recommend The Second City as an effective place for Black comedy to thrive. We understand you may need time to implement these changes. We look forward to hearing from you within 72 hours.”

Sari Botton: “Last night I resigned as Essays Editor of ⁦‪Longreads‬⁩ in solidarity with culture columnist ⁦‪Soraya Roberts‬⁩ — although “resigned” is misleading, since I was a 1099 permalancer—never granted W2 employment despite lobbying for it for years. It was a heartbreaking decision.”
