Gurus O'Gold

Gurus o’ Gold Pull Into the Station

The Gurus certify a lock or two in the last days before Oscar, especially in Supporting: our bakers’ dozen brain trust see Yuh-Jung Youn and Daniel Kaluuya as ready wins. Chadwick Boseman is expected as a posthumous win, while Best Actress shows movement in the first three slots, with the Gurus narrowly expecting Viola Davis, and then a neck-and-neck guesstimation on Carey Mulligan and Frances McDormand. The biggest mover is My Octopus Teacher, wrapping its kindly long arms around all comers.

9 Responses to “Gurus o’ Gold Pull Into the Station”

  1. Bradley Laing says:

The documentary short “Do Not Split” is seen as having little chance to win, but that is what made a government ban the Oscar television show in a specific place.

  2. Bradley Laing says:

The documentary “Hunger Ward” (Director: Skye Fitzgerald) is about a famine in Yemen, and the starvation of children there. Is there a reason why “Do Not Split” would lead to banning the Oscar tv show in mainland China and Hong Kong, but “Hunger Ward” does not lead to some government banning the Oscar TV show in a place related to Yemen?

  3. Bob Burns says:

Laura Pausini has been an international star for years. I look forward to her performance.

  4. Bradley Laing says:

“—If there is an Oscar television show in 2021, will they thank Congress for the movie theater stimulus money, during the TV show?”

—This was first posted on February 24, 2021. And other countries governments also provided either taxpayer money, or borrowed money, for theaters and other entertainment venues. So, not just the US Congress, a lot of tax payers and politicians should be thanked, world wide.

  5. Bob Burns says:

Enjoying the show very much. Now we know how much is gained from dropping the production numbers.

A whole lot is gained. We get to hear what the winners really want to say.

  6. Bradley Laing says:

“Io sì (Seen)” by Laura Pausini did not win, but she did perform at the Oscar pre-show. Does she get a measurable form of recognition from that?

  7. Bradley Laing says:

Did the movie venue bailout money get mentioned, or COVID in other places?

  8. Bob Burns says:

Anti-climatic ending!!!!! The energy went out of the show before the halfway mark, and it went downhill all the way to the end.

I bet the NFL draft, also on ABC, doubles the ratings.

  9. Jermsguy says:

Moving Best Actor to be the last award backfired. They had no plan if Hopkins wound up winning, so it resulted in the biggest anticlimax in Oscar history. Hopkins was brilliant in The Father, too.

"Netflix, the great disrupter whose algorithms and direct-to-consumer platform have forced powerful media incumbents to rethink their economic models, now seems to need a big strategy change itself. It got me thinking about the simple idea that my film and TV production company Blumhouse is built on: If you give artists a lot of creative freedom and a little money upfront but a big stake in the movie’s or TV show’s commercial success, more often than not the result will be both commercial (the filmmakers are incentivized to make films that will resonate with audiences) and artistically interesting (creative freedom!). This approach has yielded movies as varied as Get Out (made for $4.5 million, with worldwide box office receipts of more than $250 million), Whiplash (made for $3.3 million, winner of three Academy Awards), The Invisible Man (made for $7 million, earned more than $140 million) and Paranormal Activity (made for $15,000, grossed more than $190 million). From the beginning, the most important strategy I used to persuade artists to work with me was to make radically transparent deals: We usually paid the artists (“participants” in Hollywood lingo) the absolute minimum allowable by union contracts upfront, with the promise of healthy bonuses based on actual box office results—instead of the opaque 'percentage points' that artists are usually offered. Anyone can see box office results immediately, so creators don’t quarrel with the payouts. In fact, when it comes time for an artist to collect a bonus based on box office receipts, I email a video clip of myself dropping the check off at FedEx to the recipient."
