The Gurus Of Gold Go Picture, Supporting, Doc and International Features

Here comes everybody… As the Golden Globe nominations pile up in the rearview, both the logical and the wild-eyed, and hot-hot-heat rises from the SAG, a real race is shaping up. The Gurus are fairly united on Supporting Actress, while Supporting Actor holds a few rogues. Several critical darlings drop out of the Best Picture consideration with a substantial amount of rumbling in the middle of those rankings since the first Guru outing. A first look at Documentary Feature reveals some favorites, while International Feature reveals a few predictions from Gurus who’ve already seen more from that substantial field than the average prognosticator.

  1. Bob Burns says:

A nomination for La Llorona would raise the level of the entire proceeding. [ED NOTE 9 February: You got it!]

It looks like a disconnect between the actors and the professional predictors on the prospects of the more theatrical films. The actors liked them. That opens up dialogue as a more appreciated component….. small screens presumably.

  2. Bradley Laing says:

—The Superbowl broadcast of February 7 had tv numbers down from last year. I wonder if anything that is knowable about the audience decline can be applied to the Golden Globes telecast. Have so many people cancelled cable that the ratings for any live televised event would go down? Have so many people cancelled cable that ratings for most live televised events would go down?

  3. Glamourboy says:

Dave….Let Them All Talk is NOT going to happen. You might be the only person in the world who loves that movie….and Candice Bergen is not getting a nod. Sorry.

I do think that if Bill Murray actually gets nominated he might have a shot to win. He is terrific in On The Rocks.

A Guzzo cinema sign is seen on a storefront in Montreal on Tuesday, June 18, 2019. Quebec Premier Francois Legault says his government will compensate movie theatres owners for lost concession stand revenue after a disagreement he’s dubbed ‘Popcorngate.’

"Netflix, the great disrupter whose algorithms and direct-to-consumer platform have forced powerful media incumbents to rethink their economic models, now seems to need a big strategy change itself. It got me thinking about the simple idea that my film and TV production company Blumhouse is built on: If you give artists a lot of creative freedom and a little money upfront but a big stake in the movie’s or TV show’s commercial success, more often than not the result will be both commercial (the filmmakers are incentivized to make films that will resonate with audiences) and artistically interesting (creative freedom!). This approach has yielded movies as varied as Get Out (made for $4.5 million, with worldwide box office receipts of more than $250 million), Whiplash (made for $3.3 million, winner of three Academy Awards), The Invisible Man (made for $7 million, earned more than $140 million) and Paranormal Activity (made for $15,000, grossed more than $190 million). From the beginning, the most important strategy I used to persuade artists to work with me was to make radically transparent deals: We usually paid the artists (“participants” in Hollywood lingo) the absolute minimum allowable by union contracts upfront, with the promise of healthy bonuses based on actual box office results—instead of the opaque 'percentage points' that artists are usually offered. Anyone can see box office results immediately, so creators don’t quarrel with the payouts. In fact, when it comes time for an artist to collect a bonus based on box office receipts, I email a video clip of myself dropping the check off at FedEx to the recipient."
