The Dirty Dozen

Directed by Robert Aldrich
Warner Bros.

War may be hell, but, for most of the 20th Century, it also was good for business in Hollywood. This year, more than any in memory, the major studios have cleared their shelves of titles associated with the pivotal battles of World War II and the men who fought in them. Most were released in time for Memorial Day, but all are being pitched for Father’s Day giving, as well.

The Dirty Dozen is no stranger to DVD, but its latest incarnation is noteworthy for its array of extras, which include commentary by cast members Jim Brown, Trini Lopez, Stuart Cooper, Colin Maitland, producer Kenneth Hyman, novelist E.M. Nathanson, historian David Schlow and military advisor Dale Dye. It also offers the made-for-TV sequel The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission, with an intro by Ernest Borgnine; featurettes Armed and Deadly: The Making of The Dirty Dozen and The Filthy Thirteen: Real Stories from Behind the Lines; and a vintage Marine recruitment documentary, featuring Lee Marvin.
