PROJECTIONS

Films Final Opening Weekend Take is $23.9 Million on 868 Screens;

Screens for Independence Day Holiday Weekend
SANTA MONICA, CA
and NEW YORK, NY, July 1, 2004 Fahrenheit 9/11, the
film phenomenon which has captured the hearts and minds of the entire
country, set several additional box office records and grossed more
than initial projections, finishing the weekend with a cumulative take
of $23.9 million on just 868 screens, and a five day total of $24.1
million, it was announced by Tom Ortenberg, President of Lions Gate
Films Releasing, and Jonathan Sehring, President of IFC Entertainment.
They also confirmed that the film will expand to 1710 screens for the
Fourth of July weekend and again on Friday, July 9.
The American
press portrayed this film as a cultural juggernaut when they first saw
it in Cannes. Now, looking across the country we are beginning to see
this phenomenon take hold. If you have not seen this movie -- you are
not part of the American discussion, commented Fellowship Adventure
Groups Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
We are thrilled
with the films stellar performance to date, and are very happy
to be bringing it to a wider audience across the country this coming
Independence Day weekend, remarked Ortenberg.

so over this important holiday weekend," stated Sehring.
Additional box-office
records, milestones and key figures set by the film since the weekend
are the following:
*Film achieved a
final $27,558 per screen average on 868 screens
*First film under 1000 screens to take the #1 weekend box office spot
since 1994 (beating previous record holder "Four Weddings and a
Funeral")
*Exit polls in 13 cities across the country showed 91% rated the film
excellent, 93% said they would definitely recommend (film opened in
all 50 states Nationwide)
*Number 7 on all time list of opening weekend per screen averages for
all films released wide on opening weekend
*Best Saturday to Sunday hold for the year of non-holiday adult film
*Film had the best percentage hold from Saturday to Sunday of any non-kids
film this year excepting Memorial Day weekend
*Film had the best Sunday-Monday hold of any film in the top 10
*Films box office on Monday, June 28 was a very strong $4.4 million;
Tuesdays take was $3.8 million
*Online ticket sales for the film continue to break records, key sites
including Moviefone/Movietickets.com and Fandango. Monday and Tuesday
sales for Fahrenheit 9/11 on Fandango beat those for Harry
Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban during the same period following
its opening weekend
*Highest advance online ticket sales for a documentary at over a million
dollars and growing
Fahrenheit 9/11 is 4th film in the past 5 years to sweep the nation
as a word-of-mouth film phenomenon, following Blair Witch Project (July
1999), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (April 2002), and The Passion of Christ
(February 2004)
Among the numerous
records already set by FAHRENHEIT 9/11 are the following:
*Highest opening
weekend ever for a documentary of any type (including IMAX and concert
films)
*All time box-office weekend record for any film released on less than
1000 screens, beating 1982's "Rocky III"
*Highest opening ever for a Palme dOr winner (topping previous
record holder Pulp Fiction in 1994)
*Opening weekend numbers have already outgrossed the total domestic
box office for Academy Award® winner Bowling for Columbine,
Michael Moores previous release, which was in theatrical release
for nine months
*Achieved 3rd highest per screen average opening for the year to date
among wide releases (behind only Passion of the Christ &
Shrek 2)
This years
winner of the prestigious Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival,
FAHRENHEIT 9/11 is being released by a coalition of companies that includes
Bob and Harvey Weinsteins Fellowship Adventure Group, a newly-created
special-purpose company; Lions Gate Films (AMEX and TSX: LGF); and IFC
Films. Pay TV rights will be handled by Showtime, Lions Gates
Pay TV partner.
FAHRENHEIT 9/11
is Michael Moores first feature film since BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE,
which won the 2003 Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature.
FAHRENHEIT 9/11 brought Moore his first Palme dOr and his second
major award from the Cannes Film Festival, following the 55th Anniversary
Prize he received at the 2002 Festival. Moore is the first documentary
filmmaker in cinema history to be honored twice at Cannes.
