10 Days Of Sundance
It's STILL About The Movies, Stupid .. Part 2
by David Poland
The movie line-up at Sundance is very much like the indie business… confused. There was a lot of self-awareness out there, but not a lot of inspired audaciousness. There are always one or two great movies that Sundance misses in the massive work of sifting through primarily original, unrepresented material out there. But, all things considered, it is always a good bet that we had the chance to see most of the best of what is new out there in this year's 10 days in Park City. And sure, Ken Turan had to change his cell number when Paris Hilton refused to stop calling, but that was the exception to the rule. The hype was more a side dish than since the early days.

It's STILL About
The Movies, Stupid .. Part I by
David Poland Why
all the Sundance anxiety? I
am always a little shocked when I read a bevy of stories from very intelligent
writers that seem to reflect last year's story instead of this year's story. This
year, Sundance has suffered the long-simmering residual from last year's hype
orgy in the hills. _____________________________ The

Thursday At Sundance by
ST VanAirsdale I
should have more to show for Thursday, I know, but this place is totally starting
to depress me. There's just too much space and fewer and fewer people want to
be here and my ghetto Internet hook-up at Reeler HQ West makes posting about as
pleasurable an experience as circumcision. The parties become insufferable; the
oily Hollywood douchebags scurry through the snow like rats. And when Jeff Lipsky's
ham-fisted Flannel Pajamas turned out to be the only New York feature I could
catch all day, my spirit crashed somewhat violently and I wound up having to watch
two hours of C-Span just to help flush the immediate memory.

Who
Is The Traitor ... Us Or Ralph Nader?
by David Poland What
is most fascinating about the battle over the two Nader presidential runs is that
Nader's initiating proposition is that the two parties have become very much like
the big businesses he has spent a lifetime trying to force to play by the rules,
and that the response of the parties and of many prominent Democrats has been
almost exactly like the response of those corporations. Arrogance. Abusiveness.

Things To Do
At Sundance While You're Dead by
David Poland If
there is a Garden State or Napoleon Dynamite to come out of Sundance
2006, it seems that it will be Wristcutters: A Love Story. Make
no mistake, Little Miss Sunshine is more naturally commercial and The
Science of Sleep will be more of a critics darling, but if there is a movie
here that is going to win the hearts and minds of the angst & rebellion laden
teenagers of America, it's going to be Wristcutters. ________________________ Sundance

The Illusionst
And The Science Of Sleep by
David Poland The
Science of Sleep appears to be Michel Gondry's "Fuck you, Charlie"
to Charlie Kaufman, who seems to have gotten far too much credit for Gondry's
taste for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Again, waking sleep is
a focus. But, unfortunately, this time Gondry only has himself to structure the
narrative and he could have used a real screenwriter.

wasnt in the cards for me until several weeks ago, and the wholehearted
lack of expectations that came after giving up on it should be a small, healthy
thing. | |
