LAFFING
WEEKEND
by David Poland
Somehow,
as I was jamming through the online catalog for the festival,
I just went right past Hot Chicks. But had I been paying
closer attention, I would have been almost as enthusiastic
as Luke. The screening was of 9 short films, each based on
one of what are known as Chick Tracts.

"That
first call still sticks with me," she says. "He
answers the phone, 'hello and good evening,' with such warmth,
you'd think you were encountering some delightful, impish
leprechaun."

It's not
that filmmaker James Moll was averse to tackling another
chapter in the dark legacy of the Holocaust, but his latest
film Inheritance - the story of Monika Hertwig,
the daughter of a Nazi concentration camp commandant - evolved
it seems more by chance than design.

"Holy
shit, they're here to see my film" Stanley
Nelson has just crossed Wilshire on his way to the Majestic
Crest and caught sight of a line that's not quite round the
block for a screening of Jonestown: The Life and Death
of People's Temple that will sell out.

Welles used to say that quiet people made him nervous.
"I like someone that isn't afraid to speak his mind and
engage in conversation," was the legendary filmmaker's
stance. Welles
would have loved Derek Sieg.
