UNKNOWN
SOLDIER (Narrative Competition) - The quietly powerful
debut feature by Ferenc Toth centers on a Harlem teenager left homeless
after his father's fatal heart attack. Adrift and not particularly
self-motivated Ellison nonetheless has good basic survival instincts.
While the social commentary is there, Unknown Soldier has a moody,
poetic quality that's unforced and a haunting central performance
by newcomer Carl Louis. (7:15 Laemmle Sunset 5)
COWARDS
BEND THE KNEE (Special Screenings) - Just prior to filming
The Saddest Music in the World, filmmaker Guy Madden was commissioned
to do an art installation in Germany. However, his modest "peep
show" quickly evolved into a bizarre silent feature about a
hockey player unable to play following an injury and drawn into
a dark world of sexual-psychological perversity. Madden calls it
his tribute to Universal horror movies, particularly The Hands of
Orlac. (9:45 p.m. DGA 1)
MONUMENTAL:
DAVID BROWER'S FIGHT FOR WILD AMERICA
(Documentary Competition) - Though framed by the incendiary personality
of environmental activist Brower, Monumental is as unconventional
a portrait film as its subject. Filmmaker Kelly Duane touches on
some personal highlights including his brief tenure at the Sierra
Club but what resonates most is the footage he shot of America's
most spectacular natural wonders. Brower's passion infuses every
frame and proves the old adage about a picture being worth a thousand
words, no matter how fiery. (9:45 p.m. Laemmle Sunset 5)
UNTOLD
SCANDAL (International Showcase) - An enormous success
in Korea last year and currently turning up the heat in Japan, this
tale of sexual intrigue may seem somewhat familiar. In fact, it's
the latest screen variation of Dangerous Liaisons transposed to
the elite clan society of 18th Century Korea. For the uninitiated,
a scheming charmer makes a wager with a former lover that he can
bed a virtuous woman and that pursuit appears headed toward tragic
consequences. (7 p.m. Laemmle Sunset 5)
UP
FOR GRABS (Documentary Competition) - A real life saga
that gives new meaning to the catchphrase "keep your eye on
the ball." Who caught San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds record
breaking 73rd home run? Both Alex Popov and Patrick Hayashi claimed
that honor and filmed evidence and eyewitness reports failed to
provide the unimpeachable truth. Could the court settle the case?
A genuine cliffhanger and a total delight to watch the principles
engage in rhetoric and some of the basic seven deadly sins.(9:30
p.m. Laemmle Sunset 5)
