Review:
The film by first-time director/small-time TV star
Zach Braff has lots of cinematography, lots
of jokes and lots of Zach Braff in the lead
role. Unfortunately, Zach has looks nearly as compelling
as David Duchovney, but acting skills that
are even more low-key, making his performance the
base coat on the car instead of the high gloss that
almost every movie needs on the surface.

An eye-opening look inside the "vast
right-wing conspiracy" identified by Hilary Clinton
as committed to driving her husband from the presidency.
Featuring acid portraits of Clinton nemeses, from
Gennifer Flowers to Kenneth Starr, longtime Clinton
friend Harry Thomason's documentary is an entertaining
look at a particularly bilious time in American politics.

HERO
(Special Screenings) - Miramax acquired this Chinese historic
blockbuster believing it had the next Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
And while the film by Zhang Yimou includes Tiger's Zhang Ziyi and
Jet Li was a foreign-language nominee in 2002 it doesn't measure
up to the earlier film. Nonetheless, it has enormous visual delights
and some exciting action set pieces that will leave you breathless.
(8:30 p.m. Ford Amphitheatre)
HAROLD
AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE (Special Screenings) - A
slacker comedy for the new millennium. The title duo - youthful
ethnics - come down with the munchies and seduced by a television
promo go on a holy quest for the delights of White Castle's mini
burgers. However, the path proves more difficult than one might
expect and as Cunard used to say, kinda, getting there is all the
fun. (10 p.m. DGA 1)
UNTOLD
SCANDAL (International Showcase) - An enormous success
in Korea last year and currently turning up the heat in Japan, this
tale of sexual intrigue may seem somewhat familiar. In fact, it's
the latest screen variation of Dangerous Liaisons transposed to
the elite clan society of 18th Century Korea. For the uninitiated,
a scheming charmer makes a wager with a former lover that he can
bed a virtuous woman and that pursuit appears headed toward tragic
consequences. (9:30 p.m. Laemmle Sunset 5)
UP
FOR GRABS (Documentary Competition) - A real life saga
that gives new meaning to the catchphrase "keep your eye on
the ball." Who caught San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds record
breaking 73rd home run? Both Alex Popov and Patrick Hayashi claimed
that honor and filmed evidence and eyewitness reports failed to
provide the unimpeachable truth. Could the court settle the case?
A genuine cliffhanger and a total delight to watch the principles
engage in rhetoric and some of the basic seven deadly sins. (5:15
p.m. Laemmle Sunset 5)

will take in enough at the box office that it probably might even
