BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Just how much suffering can Charlie Kaufman handle? His is easily the most compelling, complex, daring, brilliant screenplay of the year. I would still contend that it's better than the movie. But it's one of the film's two lonely nods, the film skews young, and he's up against one of the serious Best Picture contenders and a feel-political movie that has no shot anywhere else. Just don't be surprised to see Susan Lucci and Paul Newman star in and Randy Newman score his next film.

Comment
Keir Pearson & Terry George - Hotel Rwanda (WGA)A prize when there is no other.
Charlie Kaufman - Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (WGA)
Only nominated for three of his five produced screenplays... slacker!
John Logan - The Aviator (WGA)Outside shot in case of sweep

Mike Leigh - Vera Drake (WGA)
The Incredibles - Brad Bird

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
You can't really argue with the nominations, but it is hard to go more than two deep as real possibilities. If Payne & Taylor don't win WGA, tongues will wag. But most likely, all that will wag here are Sideways tails of glee.

Paul Haggis - Million Dollar Baby (WGA)... but if Haggis upsets in a M$B sweep, his screenplay has already suggested an out

David Magee - Finding Neverland
Jose Rivera - The Motorcycle Diaries (WGA)

Richard Linklater, Kim Krizan, Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke - Before Sunset (WGA)
