Director Ferenc Toth’s powerful debut follows Ellison, an ordinary 18-year-old fighting for his life in a war no one notices. Eschewing sentimentalism for straightforward, rock-solid storytelling, Unknown Soldier begins with Ellison, a whip-smart Harlem kid with no greater concern than to hook up with his girlfriend and hang with his friends. Then, one fateful morning his life is turned upside down and he soon finds himself out on the streets. Marooned with only a backpack and his meager part-time wages, Ellison’s options dwindle as steadily as his invitations to crash on friends’ couches. Newcomer Carl Louis is terrific as the
prideful Ellison, who, despite his circumstances, bravely refuses to give up on himself.

Los Angeles Film Festival Tip: The quietly powerful debut feature by Ferenc Toth centers on a Harlem teenager left homeless after his father's fatal heart attack. Adrift and not particularly self-motivated Ellison nonetheless has good basic survival instincts. While the social commentary is there, Unknown Soldier has a moody, poetic quality that's unforced and a haunting central performance by newcomer Carl Louis

Best Feature Film Award: Unknown Soldier shared the best feature film award with Catherine Breillat's Anatomy of Hell at the 2004 Philadelphia Film Festival.
