The Weekend Report

The Boss Baby again edged out Beauty and the Beast for weekend bragging rights with two family movies grossing respective estimates of $26.4 million and $24.7 million. Smurfs: The Lost Village opened with a softish $13.7 million while the octo-heist yarn Going in Style had a surprisingly resilient $12.3 million launch.

Best of the exclusive debs were the monster-relationship drama-comedy Colossal, which grossed $121,000 at four playlots and stiff-upper-lipped Brit Their Finest with $78,400. Also bowing nationally was the faith-targeted The Case for Christ with a $3.8 million investigation.

In international day-and-dates, Telugu Kattru Veliyidai had an OK bow of $287,000. Japan’s all-time box office champion ($240 million), animated Your Name., had an impressive start of $1.7 million from 294 engagements. In Québec, French comic import Demain tout commence was sturdy with a $237,000 box office following a $50 million international overseas gross. And the 56- screen start for the family drama Gifted was off to $482,000.

Session revenues generated roughly $125 million and ebbed back 28% from last weekend. It was an 18% improvement from 2016 when the debut of The Boss edged out Batman v Superman with $23.6 million to the latter’s $26.4 million.

Industry tracking indicated a mid-teen opening for Smurfs: The Lost Village following the robust $550 million global box office of the prior 2011 big blue screen edition. It got a head start last weekend internationally with a comparably diminished $15.4 million tally in 28 territories. Overseas engagements added 30 markets this weekend and bumped up to an estimated $22 million.

On the domestic side, the Smurfs had an audience that was 53% female with 63% of viewers 25 and younger. Studio exit demos also identified the crowd a 77% family.

The update of Martin Brest’s 1979 Going in Style was expected to gross a modest $8-$9 million in light of its older appeal. Exit demos reflected that draw but that segment of the audience proved to be more vociferous. It also had a slight female tilt of 53% with a staggering 95% of patrons aged 25-years and older of which 72% were aged more than 50-years old with a plurality AARP members. Its demos are certain to get younger in the coming weeks.
