The Weekend Report

Beauty and the Beast diminished by half but nonetheless towered over the competition with an estimated $89 million weekend. That left incoming Power Rangers securely in second with a $40.1 million debut. The session’s two other newcomers had meh results with Alien-esque -fier Life opening to $12.4 million and a comic retread of TV staple CHIPS puttering to $7.5 million. sci-fier Life opening to $12.4 million and a comic retread of TV staple CHIPS puttering on the big screen to $7.5 million.

Among international day-and-dates, Indian imports saw good starts for both Telugu Katamarayudu of $1.2 million, and Hindi Phillauri of $262,000. In limited wide release. curmudgeonly Wilson grossed a dull $330,000 with even more dire results of $128,000 for the basketball drama Slammin Jamma. Exclusive bows were dull with only the jazz bio doc I Called Him Morgan with a pulse at $12,100 at a single room.

Revenues for the frame generated close to $200 million and ebbed back 25% from last weekend. It had a comparable 23% erosion from 2016 when the debut of Batman v. Superman bowed to $166 million with that session’s other newcomer My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 slotting third with $17.9 million.

A full-bore advertising assault propelled Power Rangers to what box office pundits anticipated would be in the arena of $40 million plus launch. Based upon the venerable 1990s TV skein “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” of youthful superheroes vs. equally daunting supervillains it previously received a big screen incarnation in 1995. The new version (anticipated as a franchise) drew a 60% crowd with 50% of the audience aged 25-years and older. The key 18-34 year old corridor accounted for 73% of viewers.

The nostalgia element was considerably more tame for the 1970s TVer CHIPS. Withering reviews for its lewd comedy and poor exits only solidified tracking that suggested a $7-$9 million opening. Its audience tilted 53% male with 68% of ticket buyers aged 25 and older.

Life tracking had analysts projecting a $14-$15 million debut but EWOM resulted in damped down actuals. The chief hurdle for the picture was the sense of it being derivative of countless other lost in space and in peril sagas and déjà vu ain’t what it used to be. Its crowd was 55% male with 57% aged 25 and older.
