BYOB w/ a side of sweet potatoes

watched the master 2012 – somehow i got through a movie over 2 hours – overall – this is one of the most forgettable movies i’ve seen – but good acting.\

there must have been a lot of different ways this could have ended … the one they chose was so average.

in the end – the entire audience of like 12 people were dead silent.

also i saw this in normal film and not 70mm …which i
    was fine with.

PT Anderson fooled every critic by making a film that Paul W.S. Anderson would make.

  2. Mike says:

Master didn’t do much for me, either.

However, Lincoln, which I expected to be as boring as anything, kept me rapt the whole time. The only thing I didn’t like about Lincoln, and it’s a complaint that I have with a lot of Spielberg’s movies, is the ending.

    SPOILER

The pulling into the flame to do a bit of Lincoln’s second inaugural address really didn’t do it for me. I just spent two hours dealing with the idea of Lincoln trying to sew up the country, and Spielberg had to ruin all his hard work by putting the final stroke on with a sledgehammer.

    SPOILER OVER

Still, that was far and away a better movie than Argo. Can’t wait to see Silver Linings, Les Miz, and maybe ZD30.

  3. Monco says:

Loved The Master. It’s my favorite of his filmography so far.

  4. Mariamu says:

Well I liked The Master and Lincoln.

  5. Not David Bordwell says:

Just caught a spot for Red Dawn on USA featuring a quote from JOE LEYDON:

    “full-tilt excitement”

The context from the original review (from Sept. 27?), though:

“Between stretches of full-tilt excitement, “Red Dawn” slows down for sequences in which actors must deliver dialogue that ranges from serviceable to risible. (Hemsworth and Peck must do some especially heavy lifting.) From time to time, the thesps are a tad too passionately intense for their own good, and aud giggles may result.”

Do publicists know what “risible” means? Hilarious.

Sorry your fame had to come in the Joel Siegel slot, Joe.

  6. Don R. Lewis says:

THE MASTER was like hooking up with a gorgeous woman you couldn’t wait to see naked then, once you did and it was all over, the build up was way better than the result.

    Or, what Sanj said.

  7. sanj says:

with some films – it builds up just for the ending and
when it doesn’t come out as you totally expect then some people either get that or don’t .. with the master – how many times did PT Anderson see it with an audience….if he’s got time he should watch it like a dozen times with audience…

Take Shelter 2011 is also about the ending …

i guess it started for me with fight club ….with that crazy ending..

with the joker in the batman movies – that crazyness was easy to figure out for most people ….how it started.

guess what all of these movies have in common ? the crazy people.

there must be a dozen movies / documentaries in the last 6 months that deal with different types of crazy …
which goes beyond the crazyness of most horror films.

also the savages – if they cut this by 30 minutes – would it be up for movie awards ?

  8. sanj says:

    lower than expected review …

    Miri and Ben gave this a 1.5/ 10 and 2 / 10

    Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Blu-ray)

  9. sanj says:

watched DP/30: Hitchcock, actors Toni Collette, Jessica Biel

    - well the lighting was different but i liked it – pretty good audio…

    - the most interesting part wasn’t even about the movie – it was DP question about photos Biel took way back in 2000 for gear magazine…. kinda came from nowhere

    - didn’t bring up more old movies both of them did .. DP usually likes bringing up small indie movies.

    - ScarJo was like only mentioned once …

    - it took 3 years for Biel to come back for a dp/30 … will she come back next year ?

    - Biel is nothing like Jennifer Lawrence in interviews.
more nice and professional like an Ellen Page.

    - interview was like 26 minutes – DP should go back and get the other 4 minutes.

  10. Krillian says:

    Whatever happened to these movies?

HUNTER KILLER with Gerard Butler and Sam Worthington.

KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM with Peter Dinklage and Ryan Kwanten.

SILENCE with Daniel Day-Lewis and Benecio Del Toro.

TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Brad Pitt.

TWO MOTHERS with Naomi Watts and Robin Wright.

  11. sanj says:

i’m kinda surprised that Mitt Romney is no longer in the
news media … it’s like one day your running for the president and then all those super old dudes on cnn don’t care about you at all….even the late night comics dropped him pretty quick.

does anybody care about him anymore ? dude had plans….would any of them actually work or would it be like watching a Roland Emmerich movie come to life .
like Mitt becomes president and then 24 hours later – wall street shuts down and the global economy goes down.

  12. sanj says:

shout out to DP for actually getting Jake Gyllenhaal …this went by super fast and no crazy questions / answers … big difference for me than the Maggie Gyllenhaal dp/30 which i didn’t like … but i did like their dad Stephen dp/30 .

hopefully Jake will get more dp/30′s for his future films
    next year.

  13. Js Partisan says:

Kril, they either fell off the map or they will be in theatres sometime in the next year.

  14. sanj says:

watched – DP/30: 2012 – The Year of Matthew McConaughey

well this wasn’t a standard dp/30 – i can see why some people don’t like this interview – not really DP’s fault.
it’s his answers are long and with lots of metaphors…
reminds me of deepak chopra in a way …

also good – didn’t spoil any of the movies he was in ..

still waiting for amber heard / rachel leigh cook dp/30′s

dp/30 tv series that are needed… ..bullet in the face tv series – crazy stories – with real acting performances by max williams – kate kelton …. if it weren’t on ifc tv …and got on hbo / fx / it would get way more attention. you could be on tv and still be hidden from the critics … 6 episodes is all they made …at least the tv series is avaiable for digital download . some people might give this a show …considering how much is out there right now.

  15. sanj says:

hey DP – are you going on tv for oscar picks anywhere ? you can use it to promote the dp/30′s …actually show some clips …i was watching cnn and i think the guy from the wrap was doing oscar picks . you should post a quick notice for media who want interview you .
if the US media don’t want you go to the bbc ..they have like a dozen channels.

also DP – if you get Jessica Chastain again for dp/30 make her do the entire interview in british voice.

red hook summer 2012 comes out on bluray at the end of december .. but critics don’t seem to care about old Spike Lee anymore … the dp/30 with spike was strange
for the first 15 minutes .. he’s lucky he got oldboy and inside man 2 …

finally what happened to mighty fine 2012 ? DP you seemed to have the exclusive interview which i kinda liked and yet Rainey Qualley isn’t that huge of a name right now .

these indie movie stars should do some tv guest stars to get known … Brit Marling could be such a big star on hbo with her own show right now with millions of viewers …

some movie stars are afraid of doing tv and some tv stars just can’t be huge movie stars ….. thats what they won’t admit too. some actors just got lucky…. truly lucky.

  16. Rashad says:

    Mike hates Lincoln’s own speeches.

  17. Mike says:

Rashad, I think his speeches are great. It was the movie’s timeline I found weird.

    SPOILER

For two hours we see him leading up to his second innauguration. Then we see him killed. Then we go back to the second innauguration. Seemed clunky and didn’t work for me.

  18. movieman says:

Despite all the “Les Miz” and “ZDT” awards rumblings this weekend, l still think it’s too soon for Hooper and Bigelow to repeat.

Do you really think a journeyman (Hooper, who just won 2 years ago) or a–ewwww!!!!!!!!!–woman (who just won 3 years ago) will bag two Best Director Oscars before, say, Marty Scorsese?

Which means that “Silver Linings” and “Lincoln” (it’s never too soon for the Academy to throw another statuette at SS; and he hasn’t won since ’98) are still the true front runners.

Unless “SL” refuses to pick up steam at the b.o. (weirdly, it hasn’t so far), I’d say it’s Spielberg (and “Lincoln”s) award(s) to lose.

    Consider:
    (A) A “BIG” historical topic
    (B) DDL in a once-in-a-lifetime performance
    (C) SS, the crowned prince of Tinseltown
    (D) A major critical AND (will wonders never cease?) b.o. success
    (E) A movie that makes Hollywood feel good about itself.

If Harvey wasn’t in the mix, I’d say it was no-contest at this point.

  19. Mike says:

Depends on how big a head of steam Les Miz gets. If it becomes a mamouth, it could take diector with it.

I’m not sure the Academy agress with your assessment on Hooper. They don’t tend to worry too much if others think a director is a journeyman, as long as he lines up with their sensibilities. Can’t you just see the Academy giving Hooper a second before Marty? Seems like a realistic probability.

  20. movieman says:

    Seems like a realistic probability.

But an infinitely depressing one, Mike.
No matter how good, even terrific, “Les” turns out to be.

  21. movieman says:

That said, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there’s a repeat of ’98 when Spielberg won for director–over John Madden, another British “journeyman” type–and “Private Ryan” lost out to “Shakespeare in Love.”

IF “Les” really is everything it’s being cracked up to be.

  22. sanj says:

PSY – Gangnam Style – hit 800 million views –

    - the power of social media + a catchy pop song….

    - there could be a chance this video could hit 1 billion views at some point

    - i kinda got bored after watching it 3 times….i watched
    the friday video more times..

    - psy did all this without doing any dp/30′s . DP missed out. DP needs to start dp/30 music . start with somebody easy like the rolling stones. get on that DP.
only DP could understand what Keith Richards is saying.

    - nobody seems to care about Adele anymore – she had 1 hit song – thats it. now she might get mentioned in
    the tabloids.

  23. YancySkancy says:

sanj: Adele has had three number one singles in the U.S., and “Skyfall” is currently at number eight. She recently had a baby, and undoubtedly will be out of the spotlight for a while. Then she’ll come out with a new album, and probably be a sensation all over again. I wouldn’t worry about her. She’s only 24.

  24. Joe Leydon says:

Yancy: I think he was just spreading rumors ’bout her.

  25. scooterzz says:

“IF “Les” really is everything it’s being cracked up to be”

initial reactions aside, it’s got some issues…i’d say the only ‘lock’ is anne hathaway…

  26. sanj says:

i was watching interviews for life of pi 2012 – actor Suraj Sharma had zero experience acting experience…this wasn’t some low budget film – pretty neat…cool story that DP missed out for a dp/30 .

that kid from beasts of the southern wild got a dp/30 – but DP never posted the dp/30 .

maybe the dp/30 format should change to reality show – actors fight each other to get interviewed by DP .
the losing actors go to the trade magazines that nobody reads.

  27. scooterzz says:

oh, and btw — just watched ‘liz and dick’ from lifetime…hands down, the best turkey of the holiday…jus’ sayin’…..

  28. sanj says:

Christie Will – writer / producer of tv series mostly –
she’s done some movies with the latest being
Slightly Single in L.A. also LOOK AT HER!

she hasn’t landed that big tv sitcom writer on a major network … or a big movie at sundance. which could
all probably happen at some point in the future.

DP – get a dp/30 with her before she becomes
    famous…

  29. cadavra says:

Hay, it took Marty close to 40 years to win his FIRST Oscar! He’s still got time, as well as a contender next year.

  30. sanj says:

funny 3 minute video …if a more famous comic tried doing this ..this would get a lot more views.

if he did this for an hour straight – i’m gussing best buy
would be mad .. there’s a whole free speech issue thing going.

  31. sanj says:

where are the diary of a wimpy kid dp/30′s ? they made 3 movies and nobody shows up for a dp/30 ?

Chloë Grace Moretz was in one . now she’s super famous and stuff.

“Roger Ebert gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of four, writing “It’s nimble, bright and funny. It doesn’t dumb down. It doesn’t patronize. It knows something about human nature”

the best Liz and Dick lifetime movie twitter comments …

so the reviews seem bad and comics are having a blast with this …

it took Lindsay Lohan to get peoiple hyped up about the lifetime network. this is truly the power of celebrity + tv.

meanwhile real movie critics are too busy with real movies to even deal with this tv movie .

    Collin Sherwin ‏@USFCollin
Congrats to me for getting through 6 min of Liz and Dick before I scooped my eyeballs out with a grapefruit spoon.

    Gungan Joe ‏@GunganJoe
I guess this is the Padme and Anakin frolicking in Naboo portion of Liz and Dick.

    elan gale ‏@theyearofelan
Lindsay Lohan breaks new ground and shows her versatility in Liz and Dick by playing a chain-smoking emotional wreck pill-popping alcoholic

    Alan Cumming ‏@Alancumming
Judging by my twitter feed, I might be the only self-respecting queer not to have seen Liz and Dick. How was it? Really. #tvscaresme

    Michael Ian Black ‏@michaelianblack
I am neither watching football nor “Liz and Dick” so I basically don’t exist right now.

    Abby Elliott ‏@elliottdotabby
Was Liz and dick en par with baby geniuses or what?

    mary lynn rajskub ‏@rajskub
How long before I knock my husband out with a bottle of vodka and turn on Liz and Dick

    John Fugelsang ‏@JohnFugelsang
It’s like Cinemax threw up and the vomit wrote Liz and Dick.

    Adam Shankman ‏@adammshankman
Why does it feel like Liz and Dick, starting in one hour is like waiting for the Mayan Apocalypse…

    J ‏@metafictioned
flipping back and forth between “liz and dick” and a documentary about the mumbai terrorist attack, not sure which is the bigger massacre..

    Jen ‏@princessigh
It makes me sad that people are complaining so much about Lilo in Liz and Dick. It’s like yall want to see her fail.

  33. sanj says:

hey DP – anybody showing up for a Les Miserables dp/30 ?

i mean they clearly want awards so some of them have to show up – Anne – Hugh and Russell are too famous for a dp/30 – so you’ll be stuck with Seyfried ,,,

but it’s not fair for rock of ages – there were like 10 actors who could have shown up for a dp/30 .

somehow this les miz is like 100 times better ? besides you hear all the music for free on youtube.
    doesn’t that bug critics ?

do famous actors singing cover songs really deserve a oscar ? they could have made this film at anytime …

i really want a Jessica Chastain dp/30 with a british accent. she’s evolved to being british super award winning actress …same thing with Amy Adams.

who’s coming up for dp/30 in december – come on DP – you gotta hype some of your interviews..make more this week in dp/30 videos.

  34. sanj says:

i watched liz and dick – lifetime

    new thoughts -

    - it makes sense if somebody from grade 9 wrote this . the logic of the movie made my head hurt.

    - what did LexG think of this movie ?

    - this was a experience that might be needed in a theatre

    - any Katherine Heigl romantic comedy is better than this …

    - why didn’t Liz care about her kids ?

    - do real actors watch this and hang their heads in shame?

    - Joe Leydon was probably married to Liz Taylor at some point

  35. sanj says:

watched DP/30: Middle of Nowhere, actor Emayatzy Corinealdi

    - standard dp/30 ….questions and answers were alright didn’t learn nothing about the film . most of the other dp/30′s are more balanced out …

    - the word sundance was mentioned every 3 minutes.

    - i did watch a couple of interviews with Omari Hardwick
    which i liked

hey DP – the biggest dp/30 shock was how much i liked
Jake Gyllenhaal interview but hated the Maggie Gyllenhaal
    interview.

    - there’s so many people i want back for a dp/30 ..and yet i also want totally new people … balance it out.

there’s a dozen people i want for a dp/30 by the end of the year … how many telegrams do i have to send to the dp/30 factory so somebody can phone these super rich actors to show up ? it’s not about them getting awards for performances i like …it would be nice but it’s about a performance.

Michael Stuhlbarg / MIB 3 and Emily Blunt / Looper were my favorite actors – so if they ever come back for a dp/30 – i want DP to actually talk in detail about those movies. DP talked to Biel about action movies but never actually mentioned the total recall movie… sometimes i wonder how DP forgets movie titles are months old ..
where William Friedkin talked about every movie he’s done ever ….

also a big shock – cloud atlas dp/30 – only the directors came but the huge acting cast stayed away for dp/30.

also – i liked Anna Karenina dp/30 a lot but have very little desire to even watch this movie .

also – the bbc has like 12 different channels – get bbc to run the dp/30′s . …the uk has no idea who you are DP you could have a monopoly on movie interviews over there.

“Any time a movie causes a country to threaten nuclear retaliation, the higher-ups wanna get in a room with you… In terms of getting the word out about the movie, it’s not bad. If they actually make good on it, it would be bad for the world—but luckily that doesn’t seem like their style… We’ll make a movie that maybe for two seconds will make some 18-year-old think about North Korea in a way he never would have otherwise. Or who knows? We were told one of the reasons they’re so against the movie is that they’re afraid it’ll actually get into North Korea. They do have bootlegs and stuff. Maybe the tapes will make their way to North Korea and cause a fucking revolution. At best, it will cause a country to be free, and at worst, it will cause a nuclear war. Big margin with this movie.”
~ Seth Rogen In Rolling Stone 1224

“Yes, good movies sprout up, inevitably, in the cracks and seams between the tectonic plates on which all of these franchises stay balanced, and we are reassured of their hardiness. But we don’t see what we don’t see; we don’t see the effort, or the cost of the effort, or the movies of which we’re deprived because of the cost of the effort. Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice may have come from a studio, but it still required a substantial chunk of outside financing, and at $35 million, it’s not even that expensive. No studio could find the $8.5 million it cost Dan Gilroy to make Nightcrawler. Birdman cost a mere $18 million and still had to scrape that together at the last minute. Imagine American movie culture for the last few years without Her or Foxcatcher or American Hustle or The Master or Zero Dark Thirty and it suddenly looks markedly more frail—and those movies exist only because of the fairy godmothership of independent producer Megan Ellison. The grace of billionaires is not a great business model on which to hang the hopes of an art form.”
~ Mark Harris On The State Of The Movies
