1944. World War II rages and the fate of the free world hangs in the balance. Meanwhile the black pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program are courageously waging two wars at once — one against enemies overseas, and the other against discrimination within the military and back home. Racial prejudices have long held ace airman Martin “Easy” Julian (Nate Parker) and his black pilots back at base — leaving them with little to do but further hone their flying skills — while their white counterparts are shipped out to combat after a mere three months of training. Mistakenly deemed inferior and assigned only second-rate planes and missions, the pilots of Tuskegee have mastered the skies with ease but have not been granted the opportunity to truly spread their wings. Until now.

As the war in Europe continues to take its dire toll on Allied forces, Pentagon brass has no recourse but to reconsider these under-utilized pilots for combat duty. Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, Col. A.J. Bullard (Terrence Howard) awards them the ultimate chance to prove their mettle high above. Undaunted by the prospect of providing safe escort to bombers in broad daylight — a mission so dangerous that the RAF has refused it and the white fighter groups have sustained substantial losses — Easy’s pilots at last join the fiery aerial fray. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies in a heroic endeavor to combat the enemy — and the discrimination that has kept them down for so long.

THE FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER announces the North American Premiere of Roman Polanski’s CARNAGE as Opening Night Gala selection for the 2011 NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL

Friday, July 29th, 2011

New York, NY, July 29, 2011 — The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today that Roman Polanski’s CARNAGE will make its North American Premiere as the Opening Night film for the upcoming 49th New York Film Festival (September 30 – October 16).

“From KNIFE IN THE WATER (which screened at the first edition of NYFF in 1963) to REPULSION to THE TENANT, Roman Polanski has shown himself to be an absolute master at making the most restricted spaces come to dramatic life. In CARNAGE, aided by four remarkable performances, he has reached a new pinnacle in his already extraordinary career,” says Richard Peña, Selection Committee Chair & Program Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Based on Yasmina Reza’s “God of Carnage”, the 2009 Tony Award-winner for Best Play, CARNAGE follows the events of an evening when two Brooklyn couples are brought together after their children are involved in a playground fight. Produced by Said Ben Said, the Sony Pictures Classics release stars Academy Award winners Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz and Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly.

Commenting on the Opening Night Selection, Rose Kuo, Executive Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center, said, “We are delighted to kick off the festival with a quintessential New York story featuring superb performances from a quartet of the finest actors working today. The film will certainly provoke the kind of discussions about contemporary issues that guarantee a memorable night.”

The 17-day New York Film Festival highlights the best in world cinema, featuring top films from celebrated filmmakers as well as fresh new talent. The selection committee, chaired by Peña also includes: Melissa Anderson, Freelance Critic; Scott Foundas, Associate Program Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center; Dennis Lim, Editor, Moving Image Source & Freelance Critic; and Todd McCarthy, Chief Film Critic, The Hollywood Reporter.

General Public tickets will be available September 12th. There will be an advance ticketing opportunity for Film Society of Lincoln Center Patrons and Members prior to that date. For more information visit www.Filmlinc.com/NYFF or call 212 875 5601.

Check This Out: hitRECord at the Movies in SF

Friday, July 29th, 2011

If I lived in San Francisco, I so know where I would be on Wednesday, August 24 — at the hitRECord at the Movies event at The Regency Ballroom.

I’ve written here before about hitRECord, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (aka “RegularJoe)’s collaborative arts effort wherein people upload things and merge and meld things, and play around with some other things to create some very intriguing projects. Since I last wrote about hitRECord, they even have a Tiny Book of Tiny Stories, which started out as a collaboration, and which has led to a series of Tiny Stories books that are set to be published by ItBooks and HarperCollins.

If you’re an artist, a storyteller, or just an all-around creative person, hitRECord is a cool place to collaborate with other brilliant-minded types. Artists upload illustrations, papercuts, songs, what have you, and other artists pull various bits and pieces together in creating something nifty. So check it out. If you missed this the last time I posted about hitRECord, here’s Morgan and Destiny’s Eleventeenth Date — The Zeppelin Zoo, which played at SXSW. It’s a little cutesy-cute … but in a cool way, promise.

And if you’re in San Francisco, here’s where you can get the scoop on the upcoming hitRECord event.
