    It’s going to do 80, but overseas is a toss up. It really does depend on what the material means to Japan and England. If they are as into as the US. It could do 300. Do not under sell it. It may surprise you.

  10. Never underestimate an Event Picture, especially when that picture is something audiences have never seen before. A $70m opening is doubtful due to the length and rating but only $450m worldwide? Conservative, very conservative.

    70 domestic. I’d say more, but the entertainment/leisure market is getting softer by the month. If it breaks 80, then the old “Depression = Box Office” is alive and kicking. Personally, I think their are too many free options for that to be a given, but maybe Dave’s “escape to the theater” theory is right.
    Worldwide will be much lower than anticipated because half the globe is on economic fire, if no one here has noticed.
    U.S. stocks fell to the lowest level since 1997 and European stocks slipped toward six-year lows registered earlier this week, while economic data showed economies faltering from Japan to Sweden.
    Japanese factory output fell a record 10 percent in January, dragging down the number of new jobs on offer as Japan’s recession appeared to be deepening.
    India’s economy slowed more than expected from October to December, while fourth-quarter data from the Nordic region showed the Danish and Swedish economies contracting at record paces and Finland entering recession.
    The South Korean won fell to an 11-year low against the dollar as analysts said risk aversion fed by the fragility of global financial system would impede any recovery.
    Japan is a savings-based culture, unlike the west. They’ll drop expensive entertainment, (which movies are in Japan), in favor of online since the whole country is broadband and wifi. As for South Korea, I’m not sure how US theatrical does, but the secondary market is literally gone.
    It’s North America, parts of Europe and Australia. IO’s right that book nostalgia is going to be important.
    FWIW, I think WB is going to regret not splitting Snyder’s full cut into two movies with March and June releases.

    I think 300 business is the ceiling, here – probably about a $75 million opening (Warners has left no stone unturned for marketing this thing), FAST fade to about $180 million domestic, and good appeal overseas – about $400 million worldwide.
    The bigget hit of the spring will still be Monsters Vs. Aliens, which MIGHT do $200 million.

    Since this was just a test I think it would be helpful to leave the poll results hidden until after people vote. History has shown that people will always tend to be swayed to vote for the winning choice and you wouldn’t want to influence your results, right?

    Waiddaminute. MONSTERS VS. ALIENS opens 3/27 in IMAX? Do they really think WATCHMEN’s legs will be so wobbly that it’ll get pulled from those screens after only three weeks?

    Use the old name. You get a new nickname. Jeff’s new nick is P0WND! It’s also not crazy P0WND! It’s not. It really is not crazy, but when have I ever been right about genre box-office before? It will do 80. Even if it does not make 80. They will state it does 80.
    Oh yeah: do not undersell it doing something really big and stupid next weekend. This is the turn many people have wanted all through out the Winter, and it’s finally here. Please do not act if the people really will care about IKFP next week, when all there will be next week are the Watchmen.
